Motivation is what drives you. Ultimately, why you do something matters just as much as what you do. Motivation is a critical element in making progress on things you set out to achieve, such as specific goals.

The most sustainable motivation comes from within: when your actions align with your values and feel truly yours (not driven by external pressure). Research on Self-Determination Theory shows that this autonomous motivation creates more fulfillment and may be most likely to “stick.”

A daily practice can be simple: At random points throughout your day, pause and ask yourself three questions:

  • What am I doing?
  • Why am I doing this?
  • Where is it taking me?

Notice what genuinely excites you versus what you’re doing out of obligation. (Bonus tip: tapping into where positive feelings and associations lie is also a research-based approach to enhance motivation and drive to stick with things.)
